Dana Cooper is the Director of Youth Enrichment for Detroit PAL.
Dana K. Cooper is a true native Detroiter. Private school educated most of her life (grades 3-12), Dana learned the value of discipline and extra curricular activities at an early age. She is a graduate of St. Martin DePorres High School. Coming from a family of 10, her parents kept her and her siblings heavily involved in sports, which became a natural love for her years later in high school where she excelled in track, cheer, softball and volleyball as an All League athlete. Dana’s love for sports influenced her to pursue a Masters degree in Sports Administration. Dana served as an intern with Detroit PAL for 500 hours while she completed her master’s degree at Wayne State University in Sports Administration. During that time, she took on the responsibilities of running and overseeing the volleyball and soccer programs. Her passion is youth athletics and she has dedicated the last 10 years to the inner city youth in Detroit as an Associate Athletic Director at Detroit PAL. As an Athletic Director, Dana has been a strong advocate for girl’s participation. She led PAL’s volleyball league to increase it’s participation base by 20%. The league began with 6 teams and has expanded to over 25 teams, making it the largest middle school volleyball league in the city of Detroit. She also revived the organization’s softball program by engaging more participants and volunteers. Since then, both sports have grown in number of participants, number of volunteer coaches and the number of trainings available to coaches, kids and referees. Dana spearheaded the 2013 organizational initiative, The Girl’s Initiative, around girl’s participation and program enhancement which resulted in increased quality to programs for girls and a 25% increase of girl participation. It’s these accomplishments that aided her to be offered a newly developed role within Detroit PAL as Community Partnership Director. Since being in this role, she has already been influential in providing layered services and resources to our youth and families. In Dana’s spare time, she enjoys coaching, reading, writing and enjoying the world with her daughter.
