Detroit PAL and the Detroit Recreation Department partnered up to bring the kids of Detroit the 17U Summer Slam Basketball Tournament!
The tournament games took place at Adams Butzel Complex and Heilmann Recreation Center throughout the weekend. Nine teams competed in the tournament, representing all parts of the city of Detroit. “Games on both days were very close,” said Detroit PAL Associate Athletic Director Chris Clough, “They only intensified as the field narrowed!”
Teams represented not only PAL, but also the Diehl Boys & Girls Club, the WOW Church and Life Center, the Matrix Center, and Adams Butzel, Lasky, and Crowell Recreation Centers. All of the student athletes received a donation of a duffle bag full of school supplies from the Detroit Pistons for taking part in the tournament!
One of the highlights of the tournament was a resource fair for the students featuring numerous vendors and speakers. The focus of the fair was providing the student athletes with much needed information on the requirements of playing at the collegiate level and on other careers available in sports. Speakers included Alicia Bradford, Director of the Detroit Recreation Department, Dewayne Jones, Athletic Director of Detroit PAL, Erick Davie, Athletic Director for University Prep Schools, Stephan Clay, Director of Hoop Phi Hoop Basketball Academy, and Troy Secrest, graduate assistant at Defiance College.
The team from Clemente Recreation Center was the big winner that weekend, edging out the team from Heilmann Recreation Center with a score of 47 to 38 in the championship game. All teams did a great job and it was a wonderful partnership for Detroit PAL and the Detroit Recreation Department!
