October 13, 2014 kicked off Girls Basketball season for Detroit PAL! This season is on track to be one of the most competitive yet. Charter schools, D.P.S., E.A.A. and other school districts have all registered with Detroit PAL to be apart of our highly coveted athletic program.
Detroit PAL’s girls basketball program began in 2000, with only four teams competing. Today we have 33 teams registered and eager to compete. The program consists of a junior varsity and varsity division including elementary and middle school aged girls. As the number of teams participating grew, so did the level of intensity. Richard Reznik, who is a Associate Athletic Director at Detroit PAL said, “we have a lot of talent in this program… from very beginners to the creme of the crop!” From the coaches to the players, this program includes some of the state’s finest. While the program recognizes wins and loses, the level of success is truly measured in the players abilities off the court as well. As Reznik puts it, “This program and these coaches teach sportsmanship, responsibility and leadership as well as how to play basketball.”
This season of girls basketball will consist of roughly 15 games. These games will decide who is permitted to play in the playoffs and eventually championships beginning in December. This year, in addition to the girls basketball championships we will host an All Star game which will take place in late November. The All Star Game includes events such as a 3-point competition, free throw competition and spotlights players who have excelled academically.
This year’s girls basketball season is sure to be an unforgettable one! Make sure you come out and support these talented girls of Detroit PAL and the basketball program.
