29th Annual Cheer Competition

October 28, 2015

The 29th Annual Cheer Competition took place on Sunday, October 25 at Calihan Hall at the University of Detroit Mercy. The event, sponsored by DTE Energy, was a great display of the Detroit PAL spirit! Approximately 1,000 cheerleaders spent the day showing off their amazing cheer and dance skills to the crowd of thousands of supporters! “We are super excited to be here!” said Coach Raven from the Jayhawks, “This is one of the best days to be a coach. It’s what the whole season boils down to.”

The day started off with a performance by the fierce “F” team cheerleaders. Girls from each team took the floor together to do the cheer as one. Their performance really showed the crowd the unity of all the Detroit PAL teams as they broke apart from their teams to dance with their new friends from other teams around the league. The girls rocked the opening performance!

Next up, all of the “D” team cheerleaders got to show off what they have learned this year. While the girls didn’t compete in the competitioIMG_8207n, they showed the crowd how hard they have been working all season. Many of the girls were first-time cheerleaders, but they didn’t let their nerves get to them! “None of the girls have cheered before,” said Coach Raven from the Jayhawks, “This is their first competition and they worked hard all season.”

Following the performances by the “D” team, the “C” team took the floor to begin the competition rounds. This was followed by the “B” team and finally the “A” team competitions. The girls had a great time cheering on their teammates and watching the other performances. “We worked very hard this season and can’t wait to show everyone how much we’ve improved,” said one young cheerleader, “I’m so excited to get out there!”

Our special guest for the afternoon was former Detroit Lions player Rob Sims and his wife Natalie. Rob and NataliIMG_6184e joined us to show their support of Detroit PAL. They are the honorary chairs of Detroit PAL’s One Thousand Kid Challenge and just made a $50,000 donation to PAL! “This may be our first Cheer Competition, but it definitely won’t be our last,” said Rob to the crowd, “We are proud to support his city, the people of this city and most importantly, the kids in this city.”

Detroit PAL is proud of all of the girls who took part in the 29th Annual Cheer Competition. All of the girls’ hard work really showed when they hit the floor to perform. They cheered and danced their hearts out and left it all on the floor. Great job everyone!
