Detroit PAL held its 2nd Annual Middle School Cheerleading Competition on April 26 at Cass Technical High School. Eleven teams took to the floor to represent their schools and show off their skills.
The day began with the Elementary Exhibition. Beech Elementary and Detroit Service Learning kicked things off by showing off their routines. The girls all did a great job and the crowd of parents and fellow cheerleaders encouraged the girls to work through their nerves to put on a great show! The other cheerleading teams sitting in the crowd were clapping along to their cheers and reciting back to them to keep the routines energized. It was a great display of the camaraderie of these young athletes!
The JV Division started next. Chandler Park Academy and Michigan Technical Academy showed off their cheer and dance routines to the packed crowd. MTA squeaked out a victory over CPA in the JV Division, but both teams did an incredible job!
The competition concluded with the Varsity Division. Seven teams competed; Woodward Academy, Detroit Service Learning, Allen Academy, Michigan Technical Academy, Dove Academy, Chandler Park Academy, and George Washington Carver. Each team cheered, jumped, flipped, and danced their hearts out. The crowd was constantly amazed by the display of talent by these young girls. You could tell the amount of time and effort each team put into making their routines just right.
Chandler Park Academy was the winner of the Varsity Division. Head Coach Lorette Windgate was so excited and proud of all of her athletes that day. “I want these girls to work hard and be strong,” Lorette said of her team, “My number one rule for the team is respect for yourself and respect for others.” She mentioned that many of the girls on her team didn’t have their splits at the beginning of the season. They worked hard all season long and were able to perfect their routines and win the championships!
Congratulations to all of the cheerleaders that competed at the 2nd Annual Middle School Cheerleading Competition!
