Advanced Little Hoopers

December 16, 2015

The inaugural season of Advanced Little Hoopers started Monday, October 5. More than 20 six and seven-year olds crowded the Royal Oak Township Recreation Center to work on passing, dribbling, shooting and defense. All of the kids took a skills test to gauge their abilities at the beginning and a post-test when the program ended to see how much they improved throughout the eight weeks. The kids split into two teams for duration of the program; The Michael Jordan’s and the Detroit Stars.

The AdvanceMichael Jordansd Little Hoopers program focused on getting the kids ready to play 8U Basketball. Therefore, they started with mastering the fundamentals of the game, such as passing skills and defense skills. As the weeks went on, the coaches began teaching more complex skill sets, such as rebounding, shooting from around the basket, and layups.

The amazing volunteer coaches were able to teach these young athletes so much in such a short time! By the 4th week of the program, the kids were able to square off in their first 5-on-5 game. The action was exciting and very entertaining as the kids began putting their skills to the test. Passing, shooting, defense, and dribbling are all much more difficult when the clock is running, as these young players found out. The games got even more complex in Week 5 when the rules were modified to include calls for fouls and violations.IMG_2220

The program ended on November 23 with the final game between the two teams. The Michael Jordan’s came out victorious, but the Detroit Stars put up quite a challenge! For more pictures from the program, please click here.
