Arianna McMiller Named Youth of the Year

July 29, 2015

Arianna McMiller has been selected as Detroit PAL’s 2014-2015 Youth of the Year! Arianna, a sophomore at University High School Academy, has been playing for Detroit PAL for 11 years. Her hard work on and off the field set her apart for this great accomplishment.

Arianna has participated in the softball, soccer, and track programs during her time with PAL. “During these eleven years, I’ve experienced many things that I would not have experienced if it wasn’t for Detroit PAL,” said Arianna, “Now I desire to give back to Detroit PAL and the community by becoming a youth representative.”

Some of these extra experiences for Arianna include traveling to New York with her PAL team, participating in a commercial, and attending the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic. Arianna will have another opportunity to attend the golf classic this year, when she is formally announced as our Youth of the Year. Along with the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic, she will have the opportunity to attend other prestigious events, such as the North American International Auto Show Charity Preview and Detroit PAL’s annual MVP Awards Dinner.

“When I got the news that Arianna was selected to be the Youth of the Year I was ecstatic!” said Kenyatta Douglas, Arianna’s mother, “I am most proud that Arianna made this a goal. Every time Arianna has a goal, she works hard until she achieves it.” YoYKenyatta, who is also one of Arianna’s coaches, says that in their household school takes the most importance and that Arianna has always been a great student and a hard worker.

The lessons that Kenyatta has been able to teach Arianna on and off the field shine through in her daughter. “Being a part of Detroit PAL’s teams sports teams has taught me that your performance off the field is just as important as on the field,” Arianna stated, “No matter what, whether on the field or in school, you should put forth your best effort because you never know who is watching.”

Giving back to the community is another important part of Arianna’s life. Not only does she volunteer her time maintaining her school grounds and feeding the homeless, she also helps out with her coaches’ younger teams. Arianna hopes to one day play softball for the University of Michigan and become a writer.

Congratulations Arianna on becoming Detroit PAL’s Youth of the Year!!
