Detroit PAL proudly celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day this year through an essay contest open to all 2017 PAL middle school volleyball players. The theme for NGWSD for 2017 was expanding opportunity. The girls were asked to write an essay on the prompt:
What opportunities have you experienced through your participation in sports? How have these opportunities contributed to your success as an athlete and as a student?
Girls from the JV (5th and 6th grade) and Varsity (7th and 8th grade) Detroit PAL volleyball leagues submitted their entries to be judged. All essays were judged on the incorporation of the theme, originality and grammar/spelling. All of the girls did a great job on their essays. It was so hard to choose a winner!
Detroit PAL honored all essay writers at the Volleyball All Star Game on Saturday, March 18th. Everyone was invited down to center court to receive their certificate and a small gift for their participation.
Congratulations to our 2017 NGWSD Essay Contest Winners:
Varsity – Mariah Webster
JV – Kennedy Ellis

Kennedy Ellis, the JV Essay Contest Winner, is a member of SAY Play’s Lady Warriors JV volleyball team. When she started playing volleyball this season, it was the first time she had participated in a sport before. Kennedy, who has a 4.0 GPA at school, was chosen to represent her team at the JV All Star game, even though it was her first year playing the sport!
