Diamond Sports in Full Swing

June 19, 2014

Thanks to the DTE Energy Foundation, Detroit PAL is keeping baseball, America’s favorite pastime, alive in Detroit. DTE Energy Foundation has been a proud sponsor of Detroit PAL’s baseball and softball leagues for four years, enabling thousands of kids the opportunity to stay active in sports each summer.

In addition, the Detroit Tigers Foundation and Orchards Children’s Services are sponsoring the Detroit Youth Baseball League coordinated by Detroit PAL which will have more than 1,600 kids playing diamond sports on fields across the city this summer.
Love Train -Diamond SportsThe year’s Diamond Sports season started with Opening Day ceremonies taking place at Maheras-Gentry Park on Saturday, June 14th. The ceremony included a special tribute to the Love Train softball organization with a plaque in appreciation for the many years of service the late Ronnie Bailey provided to Detroit PAL and the community. Coach Bailey touched hundreds, possibly thousands, of lives through his devotion to youth sports and our City is a better place because of him.

Games started at 10am with a ceremonial first pitch by Rodney Cole, Regional Manager in Corporate and Government Affairs for DTE Energy, and went on until 5pm on the five fields at Maheras-Gentry with more than 500 youth ages 5-19 playing in t-ball, coach pitch, baseball, and softball games. Young girls and boys provided exciting inside-the-park home runs and stellar defensive stops, making for a number of exciting moments throughout the day.

Parents along with spectators were greeted by representatives from MetroPCS, Radio One’s Hot107.5 for pre and post-game entertainment for family and friends to enjoy and KOHL’s Injury Prevention Program who provided bicycle helmets for kids as well.

Many didn’t know quite what to expect, but in true PAL style, the games were fun, competitive and many can’t wait until next year’s games.

Our DTE Energy Foundation Detroit Youth Baseball League will continue through mid-August with our youth practicing and playing three times a week for the duration of their respective seasons.
