April 27, 2015

On Sunday, April 19, Detroit PAL athletes, coaches, and parents headed down to Comerica Park to take part in Detroit Tigers Kid’s Opening Day, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network.

2015-KOD 649Nearly 200 kids from Detroit PAL and other Detroit organizations were given the special opportunity to take part in Kid’s Opening Day. They received special t-shirts and were brought onto the field before the game to do on-field callisthenic exercises. Our young athletes were lead in a series of exercises by PAWS and Tigers’ training staff, such as squats, crunches, and different stretches.

2015-KOD 2130 After leaving the field, the kids were able to get a free healthy lunch and a backpack for taking part in the event. One Detroit PAL athlete, Daveion Tyler, was given a special opportunity. Daveion was able to stand on the pitcher’s mound and meet Detroit Tigers starting pitcher, Shane Greene! “He asked what position I played and I told him ‘pitcher, like you!’ and then he gave me a baseball that had his signature on it,” exclaimed Daveion, “It was one of the best days of my life!”

2015-KOD 2420 (1)Coach William “doc” Weir was one of the chaperones for the event. He had been to Kid’s Opening Day before, but said that this was an event he would never forget! “Daveion has not stopped talking about his experience,” he stated, “As I videotaped him on the field, I was so excited that I was close to tears.”

Once the game started, our young athletes took their seats and watched the Detroit Tigers take on the Chicago White Sox. Detroit Tiger’s mascot, PAWS, came up to visit everyone and the Tigers won the game by a score of 9-1!

After the game was over, our kids took to the field one last time. They all had the opportunity to run the bases after such an exciting day!
