On August 12, 2013 Detroit PAL hosted its largest fundraiser, The Paul W. Smith Golf Classic, at the historic Detroit Golf Club. In its tenth year, the golf classic isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. Each year Paul W. Smith has managed to raise more money than the previous year by continuously learning how to change with the economic times and relying on his key relationships with business owners and long time donors. This year he successfully raised $530,000 (net profit) for Detroit PAL, which will go directly to our youth athletic and mentorship programs. In ten years, Paul W. Smith has raised more than 3.5 million dollars for our organization.
With rocky weather projected for the majority of the day, sponsors and participants in the benefit steadily arrived for the event with an intent to golf. Paul W. Smith kicked off the benefit by broadcasting his entire morning radio show on WJR live from the Detroit Golf Club. As it continued to rain, we continued to prepare for a game of golf promptly after breakfast. Detroit PAL’s little league golf players had the opportunity to play with college golf students from Wayne State University and they also served as hosts to welcome the guests to the benefit event. After the golf game was completed, we then settled into the banquet room for the final component of the event. Detroit PAL’s cheerleaders began the dinner with a cheer to Paul W. Smith. It was to recognize him for his great work to Detroit PAL. Tim Richey, CEO of Detroit PAL presented Smith with an autographed flag signed by Detroit PAL staff, players and coaches held in a frame to show our gratitude.
Detroit PAL can’t thank Paul W. Smith and his staff for their continued support to our organization. This annual event makes it possible to serve the 11,000 children in our organization with providing them skills not only in athletics, but in building character and in academics.
