Rashad Williams Named 2013 Youth of the Year

April 12, 2014

Detroit PAL is proud to announce our first ever Youth of the Year recipient, Rashad Williams. Rashad will be serving as our youth ambassador for the 2013-14 school year.

Rashad Williams has been involved in Detroit PAL for four years, participating in basketball and track. Rashad has had tremendous success in basketball, being the captain of his team as well as being invited to play in the Adidas camp for the top 100 youth players in the country. However, academics are the most important thing for the eighth grader, who holds a 3.7 GPA at Academy for Business & Technology.

As the youth ambassador, Rashad will have the opportunity to attend many important events with Detroit PAL. He was first introduced to the public as our Youth Ambassador at the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic on August 12, where he gave a speech during the dinner presentation. Rashad spoke to a crowd of more than one hundred sponsors and donors about how Detroit PAL has positively impacted his life. He also spoke about his experience being a leader in the classroom and on the court. Rashad says his coaches are one of the reasons he is able to make better decisions at appropriate times.

Rashad has the opportunity to participate in special events like the Off Season Summer Camp that was held in August of 2013. He and five teammates were anonymously sponsored to join the summer camp presented by Compass Management and facilitated by Jordan Dumars. The camp featured notable NBA players including Trey Burke, Andre Drummond, Draymond Green and Ray McCallum. Rashad was able to interact with the players by running drills, playing one-on-one and speaking with the players. This experience offered Rashad a glimpse into the charitable work he would like to do in the future. His aspirations is to attend the University of Kentucky, become an athlete in the NBA and to remember to donate to non-profit organizations, such as Detroit PAL, to keep young children on the right path.

Rashad was also identified as one of the best players in the nation in his age group by the Jr All-American Camp, the number one middle school basketball showcase in the country. Out of 100 prospects, Rashad ranked within the top 20 and has been selected to the All-Star team. For his dedication and hard work, he will also be receiving a scholarship from Detroit PAL for post-secondary education upon his graduation from high school.

The Youth of the Year program was created to showcase one of our outstanding youth who is 13 years or older and has participated in Detroit PAL programs for three or more years. All applicants were required to submit letters of recommendations as well as write a short essay detailing their time with Detroit PAL and what lessons it has taught them. Congratulations Rashad Williams!
