The U.S. Soccer Foundation’s Soccer for Success Jamboree was held on Friday, December 11 at Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac. More than 650 kids from schools all around Detroit came excited to put their new soccer skills to the test in their first matches against other schools.
The kids ranged from Kindergarten to 8th grade, but the excitement was universal. Every child was given a new jersey, socks, and shin guards so they can continue to practice during the off-season. Teams showed off their school pride by cheering from the sidelines and encouraging each other during games. “This is really cool,” said 8-year-old Caleb, “We always play in our gym, but today we get to play on a real soccer field against other teams. I’m really excited to play!”
When the kids needed some extra energy to get them through their games, they had fresh fruit available, thanks to the generosity of Eastern Market. The Soccer for Success program is just as much about learning healthy habits as it is about teaching soccer fundamentals. Every practice, the kids spend half of their time learning about making healthy choices, eating right, and getting enough exercise. The kids then relay their new knowledge to their families, especially when it comes to picking healthy choices at the grocery store! Edible arrangements also made a donation of chocolate-covered strawberries as a fun treat for the kids!
Overall, the theme of the day was fun. The kids were excited for their new soccer equipment, the healthy snacks provided, and to be playing the game they love with their friends. This was a day when everyone won!
