The Spring Soccer for Success Jamboree took place on May 27 at Ultimate Soccer in Pontiac. More than 800 young girls and boys showed up ready to play!
The Soccer for Success program, sponsored by the U.S. Soccer Foundation, is an after-school program that teaches kids the fundamentals of soccer. In addition to 60 minutes of physical activity at least three days a week, the program includes teaching the kids about living healthy and active lifestyles. Course material includes picking healthy snacks, how to spot healthy foods at the grocery store, how to keep active, etc. Many parents note that their kids speak up about making healthy choices when shopping for groceries now!
The program has been a huge success over the years. Detroit PAL partners with schools around the city of Detroit to offer this amazing after-school program. The end of the season is marked with a jamboree, which gives the kids their first chance at playing a game against another school.
“Today was really fun,” said Jared, a Soccer for Success participant, “I like playing soccer with my friends. We practice together at school and are getting really good!”
Detroit PAL has served more than 6,000 kids through the Soccer for Success program since partnering with the U.S. Soccer Foundation in 2011. The program focuses on physical activity, nutrition, mentorship, family engagement, and partnering with schools in Detroit.
