On Saturday, December 3, 2016, Detroit PAL held a Youth Empowerment Workshop at UAW-Chrysler in Warren. The theme of this workshop was: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work. More than 50 girls and boys, ages 12-15, gathered at the UAW-Chrysler World Class Manufacturing Academy early that Saturday morning.
The day got started with all of the participants gathering in a conference room to hear from Ed Daniels, Senior Manager at Sterling Stamping Plant. He spoke to the kids about playing PAL football from an early age and how important education was, no matter how far you went in sports. He was able to play college football and even get drafted into the NFL. Even though the deal never went through, he had his education to fall back on and help him succeed.
The day was filled with fun activities that helped the youth participants learn about teamwork, leadership, and other important life skills. The kids broke off into four teams: Red Wings, Tigers, Lions, and Pistons. They spent the day learning and working with their new team.
“I learned to never give up, try your best, and to be a leader, not a follower,” said Demetrius, a 15-year-old Detroit PAL participant.
Some of the activities for the workshop included a visit to the 3-D theater, a puzzle challenge, Nerf basketball, a Lego simulation and a game of Simon Says. These activities kept the kids engaged, learning, and having fun throughout the entire day.
“I learned that communication and organization are incredibly important and necessary for a successful life and career.” said 15-year-old Emmanuel Brooks.
Thank you to UAW-Chrysler for your continued support of Detroit PAL and all of the FCA workers who volunteered their Saturday to work with the youth. All of the youth participants left with goodie bags from FCA, new knowledge of teamwork and leadership, and new friendships. Overall, it was a great day!
