In its 11th year, The Paul W. Smith Golf Classic isn’t showing signs of losing momentum. On August 11, 2014 the annual fundraiser raised more than $500,000 in net for Detroit PAL. Held at the Detroit Golf Club, this is the largest fundraiser for Detroit PAL that supports our athletic, academic and leadership programs for 11,000 youth annually. Since inception, the golf classic spearheaded by Paul W. Smith, host of The Paul W. Smith Show on News/Talk 760 WJR has raised more than $4.5 million net over the last 11 years. For Paul W. Smith’s committed contribution to Detroit PAL, the Paul W. Smith Golf Classic accounts for 20 percent of our annual budget. This year, two couples, Dan and Karin Akerson and Alan and Nicki Mulally, were awarded Honorary Lifetime Paul’s PALs Memberships for their continuous personal and corporate support. Detroit PAL would also like to thank the host of sponsors that continuously make the golf classic better than the years before. The Title Sponsor for the 2014 event was News/Talk 760 WJR. Detroit PAL would also like to congratulate, our new 2014-2015 Youth of the Year, 14- year-old Roy Ridgle. His first speaking appearance in his role was during the reception of the golf classic. He spoke on his experiences participating in PAL within our basketball and football programs and how glad he is to be the spokesperson for the 11,000 youth Detroit PAL supports. He will serve as Detroit PAL’s Youth Ambassador at various different functions throughout the year.
