Cheer Coach of the Month
Each month we will be featuring a cheer coach who is working hard to make a difference in the lives’ of these amazing cheerleaders!
June 2016: Coach Tarryn Wheeler
Tarryn Wheeler has been coaching for the past five years. She currently serves as the Detroit Dragon’s A-Team Cheer Coach. Tarryn was an honor student at Cass Technical High School before she attended Schoolcraft College, majoring in Early Childhood Education. Tarryn’s coaching experience includes coaching for the West 7 Rams, Bates Academy, Brace Elementary, Bow Elementary, and Old Redford High School.
Coach Tarryn led a major reworking of the Dragon’s strategic vision of promoting education, positive characteristics, athleticism, and community awareness. This led to a renewed effort to improve student achievement both on and off the field. Tarryn understands the important of establishing a positive rapport with her team, parents, colleagues, and members of the community and is a great candidate for the cheer coach of the month!
May 2016: Coach Dionte Thomas
Dionte Thomas is currently the A-Team Head Coach for the Northwest Cougars. He graduated from Mumford High school in Detroit, then attended Lansing Community College for 2 years, cheering at both schools. He then attended Henry Ford Community College for one year, later transferring to Specs Howard where he graduated with a degree in Media Arts.
Coach Dionte has coached for 4 years with the Northwest Cougars. Total number of years coaching being 5. When asked about his seasonal goal he states his ‘ultimate goal this season is to build young ladies and have fun while doing it.’ He coaches because he loves giving back to his community and making a positive impact in lives of others, especially youth.
