Darnell Coleman

coleman1During their time at Detroit PAL, we try to teach our youth about sportsmanship, leadership, and hard work. These characteristics not only help our athletes while they are involved in sports, but also long after they have hung up their cleats. Our alumni have learned so many valuable lessons during their time with PAL and many have gone on to do great things!

Darnell Coleman is one such alumnus. Darnell has been a part of the Detroit PAL family since 2001, when he began playing football and basketball with the Detroit Jr. Buccaneers. “After one year, my family and I joined the Westside Steelers family,” said Darnell, “It was a great experience.” Darnell continues playing football with the Steelers from 2002 until 2008, when he aged out the program. Knowing what an impact Detroit PAL had had on him as a young athlete, Darnell then turned his skills to volunteering for PAL.

coleman2After graduating from Communication & Media Arts High School on Detroit’s West Side in 2012, Darnell decided to continue his education. He was accepted into Grand Valley State University near Grand Rapids. No doubt influenced by his days with Detroit PAL, he plans to major in Sports Management and minor in Business.  Darnell is a great example of how building character and leadership skills at a young age through athletic programs can help with continued success later in life. We are very proud of all of alumni, like Darnell, who are continuing to work hard and do great things!
