Jason and Joshua Flake

The Flake’s are a great example of a Detroit PAL family. Jason and Joshua have been involved in Detroit PAL since 2010.  They both participate in the track and field and football programs for PAL. Tamara Flake, mother of Jason and Joshua, believes that the whole PAL community is a family. “We are one team, one family,” said Tamara, “We always look out for each other and cheer everyone on. The track and field program is great for families because the parents can work out alongside the kids.”

JasonJason Flake, 14, is an eight grader at O.W. Best Middle School in Dearborn Heights. Aside from participating in football and track and field, Jason also plays the saxophone in concert and jazz band at school. His favorite subject is music and he can play the piano, drums, and guitar!

Jason competes in quite a few different races during track season; including the 60M dash, 200M dash, 400M dash, and 4x400M relay. “Over the years I’ve been running with PAL, I’ve made a lot of friends,” said Jason, “I’ve learned a lot of stuff and every year I’ve gotten faster.” Jason hopes to one day break the national record in his age group for one of his races. “Every year, I’m dropping at least three seconds off my times!” exclaimed Jason.

JoshuaJoshua Flake, 10, is a fifth grader at Pardee Elementary in Dearborn Heights. Joshua’s favorite school subject is Math. When it comes to school, communication is key for the Flake family. They make sure to talk about schoolwork at home and work together. “My parents teach me to do my personal best,” said Joshua.

During his time with PAL, Joshua has made a lot of friends and has gotten close with his coaches. He is extremely motivated to continue to improve and knows he will get better by working harder. “My mom works out with me and that’s motivating!” Joshua noted. Joshua worked hard and was able to travel with his track and field team and participate in the AAU Junior Olympics!

Since being a part of Detroit PAL, Jason and Joshua have shown a greater sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and determination. The boys continue to work hard on and off the field!

At Detroit PAL, we believe that an engaged family is one of the most important factors in teaching and building character in young people. We strive to make sure that the PAL community affords these young people and their families every opportunity possible. The Flake family truly exemplifies how being involved in your children’s lives can impact them for the better!
