Coach James Henderson
Detroit PAL coach James Henderson is truly in a league of his own! Even having created his very own Detroit PAL coaching business cards is just one example of his level of commitment for coaching. His compassion towards his players, the parents and his community is evident throughout his everyday life.
James Henderson is a Detroit native and PAL alum. Henderson attended Southwestern High School where he was a member of the football and track team. Having been ranked nationally in the country for football, James was well on his way. His possibilities on and off the field seemed infinite! But, one fateful high school game and a bad tackle ended up costing James his hopes of continuing a successful career in sports. “It was devastating! I was crushed. I never ran the same after that hit. My knee was never the same after that, even today” expressed James.
Rather than throw in the towel, James Henderson continued on his road to recovery. He became an athlete at Wayne State University. He also saw this as a chance to help positively impact the lives of children by becoming a track coach. “I love helping these kids I watch them go through the program and I get satisfaction knowing that I helped them grow” said Henderson. He is also honored at the fact that his daughter was ranked number three in the country in the 1500 meter.
Despite having never quite reached his full potential as a professional athlete, James takes immense pride in coaching. He also appreciates being apart of the Detroit PAL organization. “Here we are very personal with the kids and parents. The parents can work out with the kids if they want. It gets everyone motivated.” James mentioned. In addition to coaching James enjoys building things with wood, and building and creating things in general.
Without coaches like James Henderson, Detroit PAL could not operate. His passion for sports, youth and development is unmatched. Detroit PAL would like to thank James Henderson for his selfless effort and his partnership!
