Yousif Thabet is a 7th grader at Hanley International Academy. The 11-year-old plays baseball for the 12 and under Hamtramck Greyhounds. The Greyhounds had a great 2016 season, winning the Championship game and becoming the Detroit PAL Junior Baseball (12U Rec) Champions!
Yousif, who has been playing baseball with PAL for two years, likes playing baseball with his friends and family, competing in games, and having fun. Last year, as part of the 10U Hamtramck Greyhounds, he and his team made it to the championship game. “We lost the game, but the fact that we had no wins the year before, just to get to the championship the next year was an amazing feeling,” he said. Now, one year later, his team won the Championship!
The Greyhounds team always works together. “We support each other by making each other laugh at critical moments and encouraging each other all the time,” said Yousif, “My coaches have taught me to never give up. There is always a next play and we should always try our best.”
One of Yousif’s coaches is his brother Omar. Coach Omar has noticed great changes in Yousif since he began playing baseball for PAL. “It helped him become a better person off the field as well. I notice that he’s a better student in school when he is active in sports,” said Coach Omar, “It teaches him things like how to be responsible, how to stay dedicated, and teaches him how to work together with his peers.”
Yousif makes sure to keep up with his schoolwork, and baseball helps him with that. He comes home after practice and goes straight to get his homework done. “I think sports help me concentrate on my schoolwork because it teaches me responsibilities and discipline,” he explained. Yousif’s favorite subject in school is science because of all the cool experiments they get to do. The 7th grader hopes to one day become a veterinarian because of his love for animals.
Congratulations on the Championship win Yousif!
