Our School Soccer program consists of two components: Soccer for Success and the GOAL Detroit Soccer League. Soccer for Success is a free soccer-based after-school program developed by the U.S. Soccer Foundation that uses soccer as a tool to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles for children.
We have combined our Soccer for Success program with Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s GOAL Detroit Soccer League. GOAL Detroit is an elementary school soccer program coordinated through Detroit PAL to provide children the resources to build character, fitness and exercise, enjoy the outdoors, learn teamwork and to have fun.
Our School Soccer program at Detroit PAL is for girls and boys in elementary and middle schools. Soccer for Success meets three days a week in numerous schools across the city. The Mayor’s GOAL Detroit league plays competitive games on Saturday mornings.
Core Components of the Soccer for Success Curriculum
Physical Activity: Children participate in 90-minute sessions, 3 days a week to ensure they receive the recommended 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise.
Nutrition: Soccer for Success staff deliver relevant educational activities where participants are taught the basics of nutrition, the importance of making healthy lifestyle choices and the importance of maintaining healthy eating habits.
Mentorship: Each site is staffed by caring coaches who serves as mentors that are invested in the successful development of each child. Mentors stress the importance of doing well in school and avoiding negative influences such as drugs, alcohol, and violence.
Family Engagement: Soccer for Success strives to turn parents and family members into advocates who reinforce the program’s teachings by applying them in their homes. Family members are provided with information on nutrition, health, and public services that will aid them in their pursuit of a healthier lifestyle.
